Dick Mackey

by Jim Keller March 17 2007 17:07

There was a knock on the door and Dick Mackey, Lance's Dad, enterered our B&B at Leo Rasmussens looking for his hat that was left from a party last night.

While Dick was here he was kind enough to sign his book for Rosanne. I showed him our website and the photos we had from his son's championship.

Dick had trouble with his air travel getting to Nome and missed the finish by 15 minutes. We will send him and Lance a photo album from the finish. He was very appreciative and was also very thankful for our involvement with the Iditarod and Dallas.

Dick won the historic 1978 Iditarod by 1 second over Rick Swenson (the only 5-time winner).

Dick gave us a fireside chat for 1/2 hour and we listened to the history of the Iditarod. Dick ran the original race in 1973 and is one of the founders.

Another story from historic Nome, AK.
